The Egoredes data have been collected in a long-term reseach project about acculturation networks. More information about the project can be found at [1]. Among others, the personal networks of now more than 1,000 immigrants have been collected within this project. Each of the respondents (called ego) provided answers to four types of questions:

  1. questions about ego, including country of origin, years of residence, age, gender, skin color, reasons for migrating, health, language skills...
  2. alters a list of persons known to ego (for most networks the number has been fixed to 45)
  3. questions about alters including country of origin, country of residence, age, skin color, type of relation to ego, ...
  4. alter-alter ties (undirected) pairs of alters that know each other (according to the respondent)

Analysis and visualization of this data is illustrated in the tutorial on visualization and analysis.

For illustration we provide one of these personal networks obtained from interviewing a migrant from the Dominican Republic to the USA. This network contains none of the variables characterizing ego but only the alter characteristics and the alter-alter ties.

The above network encodes alter characteristics in the following node attributes (note that all answers are provided exclusively by ego - they may or may not coincide with the point of view of the respective alter):

  • Aliv the country of residence of this actor
  • Afrm the country of origin of this actor
  • Atim number of years this actor is known to ego
  • Afrq frequency of contact with ego
  • Aol2 age in intervals of ten years
  • id visone node id (has no meaning)
  • Arac the skin color of the actor
  • Apro whether ego talks about personal problems with this actor
  • Arel the type of relationship between ego and this actor
  • Asex gender of this actor
  • Acit city next to the place of living of this actor
  • Clos preceived closeness between ego and this actor
  • Asmo whether this actor smokes or not

Furthermore, the above network encodes one link attribute (apart from an id) called rating. The values of this attribute are the answers to the question "do these two actors know each other". The three answer options are Very likely, Maybe, and Not at all likely. Note that the network is complete, i.e., the rating is available for each pair of actors (of course, the value Not at all likely indicates that the connected alters do not know each other).
